At 5 pm on May 12th, 2014, Isabel Carrasco, president of the Provincial Government and the Popular Party in Leon, left home. She crossed the park, walked alone toward the party headquarters and was shot dead in broad daylight. The crime shocked Spain. It looked like it was politically-motivated, a syndrome of the social unrest provoked by the acute financial crisis the country had suffered for several years. But the first twist came within hours. Reports confirmed that two women, a mother and a daughter aged 55 and 36, had been arrested and accused of assassinating Carrasco. Both were members of the governing Popular Party. The next day a third woman, a local policewoman who was friends with the daughter, handed over the murder weapon, while also denying her involvement in the incident.
